Macapá Beach

Located just west of Barra Grande, in the state of Piauí, Macapá Beach is one of Brazil’s secluded gems for kitesurfing, in a large river estuary surrounded by the sea and mangroves. This quiet and undeveloped stretch of coastline offers consistent wind, endless flat-water areas, and a peaceful atmosphere—perfect for riders looking to disconnect and ride in harmony with nature.

Closest Kitesurf Spots

The main spot is right in front of the beach itself, where tidal pools and sandbanks create ideal flat-water conditions. You can kite coming directly from your pousada nearby or ride in from Barra Grande on a downwinder and enjoy the empty space. The natural conditions here make it one of the top locations in the region for freeride and freestyle sessions.

Kitesurfing Conditions for Beginners

Macapá is excellent for beginners looking for calm waters and fewer distractions. During low and mid tide, large shallow areas emerge, creating perfect terrain for learning. Besides local schools, some kite schools based in Barra Grande offer lessons in Macapá, and it's a common spot for instructors to bring students seeking quiet and easy conditions.

Infrastructure

Macapá remains very rustic and undeveloped, but that's part of its charm. A few pousadas and eco-lodges blend into the natural landscape, offering access to the kite spot. While the village is small, you’ll find essential services, some bars, and restaurants. For more variety, it is an option to drive to Barra Grande on a day trip or for a longer stay.

Wind Conditions

From July to December/January, Macapá sees daily side-onshore winds ranging between 16 and 28 knots, peaking in the afternoon. The wind is clean, consistent, and ideal for long sessions with minimal interruption. Naturally, wind conditions may vary during the season, but it is usually possible to kite almost every day during the season.

Water Conditions

Flat water is the highlight of Macapá. During low tide, wide and smooth lagoons form between the beach and sandbars, ideal for freestyle tricks and practice. At high tide, the water becomes slightly choppier, but still very manageable for all levels. The water temperature is warm year-round, so no wetsuit is needed.

What Else to Do Besides Kitesurfing

Macapá is a destination for those who want to slow down. After your session, relax in a hammock by the sea, enjoy fresh seafood, or appreciate the beautiful sunset. The silence, the stars, and the nature are the main attractions here.

How to Get There

Macapá can be reached by car from Parnaíba Airport (PHB) in about 1.5 hours or by 4x4 transfers from Barra Grande in about 50 minutes. It’s also a popular downwinder destination for riders coming from Barra Grande—ride in with the wind, then return by buggy.
