Ilha do Guajirú

Ilha do Guajirú, located 220 km west of Fortaleza International Airport, is one of Brazil’s most unique and picturesque kitesurfing destinations. Technically not an island, this peaceful lagoon is formed by a peninsula that shelters it from ocean waves, creating a 500-meter-wide and 4-kilometer-long flat-water playground perfect for kiteboarding.

Closest Kitesurf Spots

The main kitesurfing zone is Praia da Barra, the heart of Ilha do Guajirú. This area is lined with kitesurf-friendly accommodations, restaurants, and bars, all facing the lagoon. From here, you can ride directly from the grassy launch zones in front of your hotel. During low tide, however, the water gets too shallow at this main spot, so riders often head a bit east or west to find better conditions or even kite in the open sea.

Kitesurfing Conditions for Beginners

Due to the narrower launch area and stronger winds, Praia da Barra may be challenging for beginners. Fortunately, local schools typically take learners to the eastern side of the lagoon, where conditions are more forgiving and space is more abundant for safe instruction.

Infrastructure

Ilha do Guajirú offers a relaxed and welcoming infrastructure focused on kitesurfers. There’s a growing number of pousadas and eco-lodges, some with wellness activities like yoga and massage. Restaurants serve local seafood and international cuisine, and most hotels are right on the lagoon. While it’s a peaceful village with little nightlife, nearby Itarema (7 km away) provides basic urban services.

Wind Conditions

From July to January, wind is consistent and strong, ranging from 20 to 35 knots. The wind is predominantly side-onshore, making it ideal for safe riding. At high tide, the lagoon can get a bit choppy, but the area is large enough to find different conditions depending on where you ride.

Water Conditions

The lagoon is generally flat or choppy depending on the tide and wind. At low tide, the main section near the hotels becomes too shallow, which is why many kitesurfers explore the quieter areas east or west of Praia da Barra.

What Else to Do Besides Kitesurfing

Ilha do Guajirú is all about nature and tranquility. Besides kiting, you can enjoy yoga sessions, stand-up paddling, or simply relax and watch the sunset. It’s also a great place to disconnect and recharge.

How to Get There

You can reach Ilha do Guajirú via a 3-hour drive from Fortaleza or a 1-hour drive from Jericoacoara Airport (note: flights to Jericoacoara are limited). Renting a car or booking a transfer with us is the best way to go. Be sure not to confuse it with Guajirú, another kite spot 117 km east!
