Closest Kitesurf Spots

The main kite area is where the Cunhaú River meets the sea. This estuary offers large expanses of flat, shallow water—perfect for freeride and freestyle. Just a few minutes away, the ocean side delivers small to medium waves depending on the tide and swell, making the beach ideal for kitewave sessions as well.

Kitesurfing Conditions for Beginners

Thanks to its wide flat-water area, Barra do Cunhaú is very beginner-friendly. The river estuary provides a safe, calm environment to learn, with several kite schools operating in the region and offering professional instruction and equipment rental. It’s also a great spot for those progressing from basic skills to more advanced riding.

Infrastructure

While still maintaining a quiet village vibe, Barra do Cunhaú does offer some infrastructure for kitesurfers and tourists alike. There are beachfront pousadas, charming guesthouses, and a few small hotels. You’ll find restaurants serving local seafood, bars, and kite centers offering gear storage and support. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming. If you enjoy the nightlife, Pipa, a surf town located 15 km away (a 45-minute drive, due to the dirt roads), is a must-see.

Wind Conditions

The wind season runs from August to December, with speeds averaging between 15 and 25 knots. The wind direction is usually side-onshore, ensuring both safety and great conditions for long sessions on the river or at sea. Winds tend to pick up in the afternoon, with more moderate breezes in the mornings—ideal for beginners.

Water Conditions

Water temperature stays warm year-round. The river mouth provides smooth, shallow, and flat conditions at mid and low tide, while the ocean beach features fun waves, especially at high tide. The variety allows riders to switch between styles depending on the tides and mood.

What Else to Do Besides Kitesurfing

Barra do Cunhaú is also great for relaxing boat rides through the mangroves, paddleboarding, or simply enjoying the natural surroundings. Nearby, you can visit Pipa and Baía Formosa, two popular beach towns and surf paradises that are perfect for day trips and add even more flavor to your trip.
