Closest Kitesurf Spots

Atins’ main kitesurfing area stretches along the wide beach in front of the village, which is protected by sandbanks. The unique combination of river, sea, and sandbanks creates good flat conditions during low tide, while it might get a bit choppy farther offshore. A short downwinder from the village takes you to stunning spots such as Canto do Atins, where the wind is slightly stronger and the landscape feels endless. More adventurous kiters can organize long downwind trips through deserted beaches and the dunes of the Lençóis Maranhenses, an unforgettable experience. It is also possible to kite at the beach, where the ocean meets the sandbanks, where kitewave fans can find better conditions to enjoy the surfing.

Kitesurfing Conditions for Beginners

Atins is a great place for beginners to learn kitesurfing. The shallow, warm, and flat water at low tide, combined with consistent side-onshore wind, provides a safe and forgiving learning environment. There are several professional kite schools offering personalized lessons, equipment rental, and rescue services. The calm mornings are particularly suitable for those just starting out.

Infrastructure

Although still small and rustic, Atins has a growing tourism infrastructure. Visitors will find charming boutique pousadas, eco-lodges, and kite camps, most of them nestled among palm trees and sandy streets. A handful of beachside restaurants serve fresh seafood and international dishes, while cozy bars and cafés create a laid-back evening atmosphere. The internet can be limited, but that’s part of the charm—Atins is a place to disconnect and embrace nature.

Wind Conditions

The wind season runs from July to January, peaking between August and December. Average speeds range between 18 and 28 knots, with stronger gusts in the afternoon. The wind direction is predominantly side-onshore from the east, providing reliable and safe conditions basically every day.

Water Conditions

Water temperatures stay around 27–29°C year-round. At low tide, flat-water lagoons form near the beach and the river mouth—ideal for freestyle and beginners. As the tide rises, small waves develop due to the river currents increasing the choppy spots, but also the navigable area expands considerably.

What Else to Do Besides Kitesurfing

Beyond kitesurfing, Atins offers incredible experiences. Take a jeep or boat trip into the Lençóis Maranhenses, where hundreds of freshwater lagoons form between dunes after the rainy season (typically ends in May). Explore the Preguiças River by speedboat, visit the nearby village of Mandacaru and its lighthouse, or enjoy horseback rides at sunset. The pace of life here is slow, the scenery breathtaking, and every moment feels like a postcard.

How to Get There

The most common route is via São Luís Airport (SLZ), followed by a 3- to 4-hour drive to Barreirinhas and then a 1.5-hour boat ride along the Preguiças River to Atins. Alternatively, private 4x4 transfers or scenic downwind kitesurf trips are also possible for those seeking a true adventure.

And of course, you can count on us to plan a memorable adventure, including Atins, on your kite journey in Brazil!
