Arpoador

Hidden between dunes and lagoons, Arpoador is still one of Brazil’s remote and untouched kitesurfing spots. With huge flat-water lagoons, wide sandy beaches, and strong, steady winds, it has quickly gained recognition among kiters seeking experiences far from the crowds. The area’s raw beauty and peaceful isolation make Arpoador a true gem for those who love nature and wind.

Closest Kitesurf Spots

Arpoador itself is the main spot and offers a mix of flat-water lagoons and open-sea conditions. During low tide, large shallow areas form close to shore at the west side of the village, providing glassy-flat water perfect for progression. As the tide rises, the landscape transforms—small waves appear, the ocean gets incredibly close to the village and riders can explore the coastline with short downwinders. For a full-day adventure, kiters can travel toward Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, reachable by downwind sessions along pristine beaches.

Kitesurfing Conditions for Beginners

Despite its wild surroundings, Arpoador is very beginner-friendly. The flat and shallow lagoons offer safe learning conditions, especially during the mornings when the wind is lighter. A few kite schools and camps have recently settled in the area, providing high-quality lessons, equipment rental, and rescue support. The consistent side-onshore wind direction and absence of obstacles make it a secure environment for all levels.

Infrastructure

Arpoador is still developing its tourism infrastructure, maintaining a rustic and authentic atmosphere. You’ll find a few charming beachfront pousadas, kite lodges, and small restaurants serving fresh local seafood. The vibe is tranquil and community-oriented, and nights are marked by starry skies and relaxed conversations. The internet can be limited, so visitors should expect a simple, off-the-grid experience that perfectly complements the natural setting.

Wind Conditions

The wind season runs from July to January, with the most consistent period between August and December. Average wind speeds range from 20 to 30 knots, often stronger in the afternoons. The direction is predominantly side-onshore from the east, offering safe and predictable riding throughout the season.

Water Conditions

Arpoador’s water stays warm all year (27–29°C). During low tide, flat-water lagoons form behind the sandbanks, creating mirror-like conditions, ideal for beginners and freestyle. As the tide rises, the open-sea area delivers choppy water and small waves, offering variety for advanced riders who enjoy mixing styles.

What Else to Do Besides Kitesurfing

When the wind calms down, Arpoador invites you to relax and explore. Take a buggy or 4x4 tour through the surrounding dunes, known as the Pequenos Lençóis – a small display of Lençóis Maranhenses –, visit nearby freshwater lagoons, or embark on a scenic boat trip along the coast. The “revoada dos guarás” – when the scarlet ibises get together at sunset – is an incredible experience to watch from a boat on the river. Stargazing at night is unforgettable, thanks to the minimal light pollution.

How to Get There

The easiest access is from Tutóia, which is accessible by any type of car. However, once in Tutóia, 4x2 vehicles have to wait for the low tide to access Arpoador, driving along the beach until you reach the village. Travelers arriving by air can fly into São Luís (SLZ) and continue by car or private transfer.
